Water Damage can Result in Mold Only 24-48 Later

7/9/2021 (Permalink)

It is extremely important to have a reputable company like SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson handle water damage, as the threat of potentially hazardous mold can develop as soon as 24-48 hours after the original water damage.

When a water loss occurs, humidity levels are high. The team at SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson uses specialized equipment like dehumidifiers to dry properties and reduce the humidity levels. This is an extremely important part of cleanup after water damage.

Normal drying methods are simply not enough to reduce the humidity levels in a home after a major water loss. Mold is able to grow behind cabinets, walls and under flooring quickly, so the threat has to be handled by professionals who know how to properly dry flooring, walls, and other fixtures in the property.

What is "Grey" Water Damage?

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Water Damage from an Overflow Water Damage from an Overflow

Gray water is water that is slightly contaminated, either because of the nature of the source or because of neglect. For example, clean water can become “gray” water if it is left untreated for an extended period time. When a toilet or washing machine overflows, the resulting water would be considered gray because of its source. Any type of water that has been used or in any way contaminated is hazardous because of the microbes that may be present. If you want to begin the cleaning and drying process before the restoration service arrives, Keep anyone with allergies, asthma or a compromised immune system away from grey water flood damage. If you opt to begin cleaning after the washing machine flooded the basement, take safety precautions by wearing protective gear such as non-porous rubber gloves, shoe covers/boots, long pants, long sleeves, safety glasses and even a mask. in order to prevent your skin from touching the water so you do not spread any microbes.

What is Clean Water Damage?

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

There may be instances when the water that has encroached upon your home is “clean.” When a pipe bursts or an appliance malfunctions, or there is a leak in your roof that allows falling rain water to enter your home, oftentimes the water will be deemed “clean.” This is perhaps the easiest type of water damage to handle, since there will not be too many microbes living in the water. The biggest hazard clean water presents are if the area that has been damaged is not properly cleaned and dried. This can result in mold and fungus growth. If the water has been standing in your home fore over twenty-four hours, it is advisable for you to contact an emergency restoration service, such as SERVPRO of Galveston/Lake Jackson, to ensure that the water is dried thoroughly. This is especially important when the area affected is easily saturated, such as carpets or drywall.

Ten Tips for Homeowners on the Care of Water-Damaged Family Heirlooms and Other Valuables

7/6/2021 (Permalink)

If the object is still wet, rinse with clear water or a fine hose spray. Clean off dry silt and debris from your belongings with soft brushes or dab with damp cloths. Try not to grind debris into objects; overly energetic cleaning will cause scratching. Dry with a clean, soft cloth. Use plastic or rubber gloves for your own protection.

Air dry objects indoors if possible. Sunlight and heat may dry certain materials too quickly, causing splits, warping, and buckling. If possible, remove contents from wet objects and furniture prior to drying. Storing damp items in sealed plastic bags will cause mold to develop. If objects are to be transported in plastic bags, keep bags open and air circulating.

The best way to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew is to reduce humidity. Increase airflow with fans, open windows, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. Moderate light exposure (open shades, leave basement lights on) can also reduce mold and mildew.

Remove heavy deposits of mold growth from walls, baseboards, floors, and other household surfaces with commercially available disinfectants. Avoid the use of disinfectants on historic wallpapers. Follow manufacturers' instructions, but avoid splattering or contact with objects and wallpapers as disinfectants may damage objects.

If objects are broken or begin to fall apart, place all broken pieces, bits of veneer, and detached parts in clearly labeled, open containers. Do not attempt to repair objects until completely dry or, in the case of important materials, until you have consulted with a professional conservator.

Documents, books, photographs, and works of art on paper may be extremely fragile when wet; use caution when handling. Free the edges of prints and paper objects in mats and frames, if possible. These should be allowed to air dry. Rinse mud off wet photographs with clear water, but do not touch surfaces. Sodden books and papers should also be air dried or kept in a refrigerator or freezer until a professional conservator can treat them.

Textiles, leather, and other "organic" materials will also be severely affected by exposure to water and should be allowed to air dry. Shaped objects, such as garments or baskets, should be supported by gently padding with toweling or uninked, uncoated paper. Renew padding when it becomes saturated with water. Dry-clean or launder textiles and carpets as you normally would.

Remove wet paintings from the frame, but not the stretcher. Air dry, face up, away from direct sunlight.

Furniture finishes and painting surfaces may develop a white haze or bloom from contact with water and humidity. These problems do not require immediate attention; consult a professional conservator for treatment.

Rinse metal objects exposed to flood waters, mud, or silt with clear water and dry immediately with a clean, soft cloth. Allow heavy mud deposits on large metal objects, such as sculpture, to dry. Caked mud can be removed later.

Different Types of Damage You Could Experience with a Fire

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Damage

Fire damage is caused by the actual fire. This can include damage to the structure of the property. Often materials are melted and can ignite other materials with this type of damage.

Fire damage can also cause different toxins to react causing explosions or they can act as accelerant spreading the flames and causing additional damage.

Water Damage

Water damage is always present with fire damage because the flames have to be extinguished. Often the damage caused by the sprinklers in a building is much more significant than the initial fire damage.

Smoke Damage

Soot from a fire can be found in every room of a house that has been badly burned, even those rooms that were not burnt. Often homeowner's belongings, furniture, clothes in drawers, important documents, paintings, and more are completely covered in charcoal black soot. Some items are not salvageable and the items that are have to be properly cleaned or the soot can permanently destroy them.

Mold Damage

After experiencing a house fire, the water damage has to be professionally handled, because when it is not properly dried mold can grow. Mold is a toxin that can cause numerous potential health effects for those living in the property. It is important to make sure the water damage is taken care of by professionals like those at SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson.

SERVPRO Customer on Experiencing a House Fire

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

A homeowner and SERVPRO customer received a call no one wants to receive from neighbors telling her that her home was on fire. The family had just left to get something to eat when they received the call. The neighbors in her tight knit community called the fire department before contacting her, but the fire moved fast and a significant amount of damage was done in the short time it took for the fire department to arrive.

Returning home, they were devastated to find their home completely burned and that they had lost nearly all of their possessions. In the moments after the fire the family learned that the fire also took their family pets and they were devastated.

During this difficult time the last thing the family wanted to do was have to clean the damage from the blaze. Having a company like SERVPRO to handle this for them allowed them to process the tragedy away from the home. It took months for the family home to be rebuilt and for them to cope with the loss of their beloved pets, but slowly life returned to normal for them.

They now live happily in their rebuilt home and the homeowner shared that she tried to find the positive in the situation as that was the best way for them to cope with the fire.

While rebuilding the family was able to add two additional rooms to their family home, giving each of their children their own room. This is something that helped the family as they tried to get back to life before the fire. The homeowner says anyone experiencing a fire should try to stay positive and that it might take a while, but that life will return to normal.

Home Fire Statistics from SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

House fires affect more than 374,000 homes each year and smoking is the leading cause of fire related death. House fires are devastating and they cause more than 7 billion dollars in damage in the United States each year.

It is important to know ways that you can reduce your family's risk of experiencing a house fire. Below is a list of a few things you can do:

Do NOT smoke in bed or anywhere in your home for that matter. People lay down while smoking a cigarette and fall asleep causing more fire related deaths than any other cause worldwide.

Unplug appliances that are not in use. Certain appliances have auto on features that keep them on all the time so you can turn them on right away. These appliances can catch fire when left plugged in.

Keep clothing and debris off power strips. Make sure your children do not leave clothes on power strips as the clothing can catch on fire.

Unplug irons and flatirons for straightening your hair. When you leave the bathroom unplug your flat iron. Do not walk away to do something else before unplugging it, because you could forget.

Iron and use your flatiron on a flat surface. Do not leave irons or flatirons on soft surfaces that may catch on fire.

Keep portable heaters away from all cloth and clothing. Make sure they are on a flat stable surface and cannot tip or be knocked over by children. Heating elements are the second leading cause of house fires.

Do not walk away from food while cooking even for a brief period of time. Make sure that you turn pot handles so that children cannot grab them dumping scalding contents which can burn them or start a fire.

Use baking soda to extinguish grease fires as water will make them spread.

Keep batteries in your smoke detectors and test them frequently.

Make a fire escape plan with your family, especially if children are on a different floor.

Call 9-1-1 if your home catches on fire!!!

Knowing these tips will help keep you and your family safe. If you do experience a house fire call SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson at 409-762-4411. We are fire restoration specialists.

Black Water. What is it?

5/15/2020 (Permalink)

The most hazardous of the three types of water damage, “black” water is usually a result of natural disasters or sewage damage. Example of Black water is water that comes from toilet overflows, sewage back-ups, rising flood water from rivers and streams as well as septic systems. Black water can include toxic materials such as bacterial diseases, chemicals, pesticides, microbes and more. If your home has suffered this type of damage, it is best to let a qualified professional begin the disinfecting process before you attempt to handle the damage on your own. They have the proper equipment and safety precautions in place to restore your home safely and thoroughly. You put yourself at risk if you are not careful with black water.

It is important to note that “gray” and “black” water are not necessarily the colors of the water that you will see in your home. They are simply terms that denote the level of contamination. If you experience a flood from a heavy rain, the water may look “clean,” but if there is any ground water that has backed up into your home as a result, there may be invisible microbes lurking in the water. This is why it is recommended that you allow a professional restoration service to assess and fix any water damage to your home. Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your physical health, as well as the structure of your home.

About Coronavirus

The CDC is responding to an outbreak of a respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and has spread to 60 locations internationally (as of this publication), including cases in the United States. The virus known as “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”)i is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.ii

Scope of Cleanup Protocol

SERVPRO professionals can perform a proactive cleanup that involves facility or structure cleaning and disinfection where the customer states that there is no active known threat of COVID-19 contamination or exposure. The customer will be required to acknowledge that cleaning and disinfecting will only apply to the current state of the structure and contents. The structure would not be protected from future COVID-19 contamination if an infected person was to enter and occupy the building.

Cleanup Scope of Work and Planning

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables at a minimum.iii These same surfaces are mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces as welliv, including:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving and Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and rugs

Cleanup and Disinfecting Procedures

Cleanup procedures generally include cleaning of porous and non-porous surfaces, disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, tools, and/or supplies used for cleanup process, and disposal of waste.

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

Tips to Protect Your Home From Electrical Fire Damage

5/10/2019 (Permalink)

Electrical Fire Damage.

Powering everything from light bulbs to kitchen appliances, electricity provides much of the comforts people enjoy at home. But while this power source may make life easier, SERVPRO Galveston Island / Lake Jackson reminds consumers that it’s not used without risk. In fact, research estimates that nearly 51,000 homes encounter electrical-related fire damage a year.

Here are a few tips to help protect your family — and your home — from electrical fires.

How to Prevent Electrical Fire Damage

  1. Schedule Inspections

Since electrical wires are usually hidden within walls, it’s not always easy to tell if a fire risk is present. The best way to catch these dangers early on — and have them repaired — is to schedule an inspection with a professional electrician about once every five years. In addition to checking wiring, these professionals can also assess the safety of your outlets and overall power use.

  1. Avoid Overloading

Plugging too many devices into a single outlet can strain your electrical system and increase the risk of fire. Unplug appliances when you aren’t using them and avoid using extension cords for prolonged periods. Also, follow all wattage recommendations when installing light bulbs.

  1. Keep Cords in Control

Electrical cords that are damaged in any way should never be used — particularly if there is any visibly exposed wire. Cords should also be kept uncovered and away from flammable objects and water sources.

  1. Check Smoke Detectors

If an electrical fire occurs, smoke detectors can provide a second line of defense to help you avoid and minimize danger. Test all smoke detectors once a month and swap the batteries annually.

While following these steps will reduce the risk of electrical fires in the home, it’s still important to know who to call when problems occur. Once fires have been put out, SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson will help put your home back in order. Offering end-to-end care, our highly trained technicians will assess the fire damage, clean soot, repair structural damage, and remove smoke odors. Committed to helping homeowners regain comfort as soon as possible, we also offer emergency restoration services 24/7. Call 409-762-4411 for immediate assistance.

Untreated Water Leaks will Cause Mold

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

Mold Growth from a Slow Leaking Water Heater

If you already know that you have had a water leak (such as leaking pipes or a leaking ceiling) then just that knowledge by itself, even if you don't see signs of water damage, is a good sign that you might have mold growing in your house around the area where the leak was. Untreated water damage can cause big threats to your home.

Mold growth from leaks can often be hidden. If the leak was behind a wall or other surface then any mold will probably be hidden behind the surface too. Even if the leak was not behind a surface there could still be mold hidden out of view behind a wall or other surface from water, which seeped through. It may be a week or two before it grows to the extent that it is visible to the naked eye as spots on drywall or carpet pads. Of course, mold being a living organism with its own agenda is not going to follow what is said in this blog thus there will be exceptions. Many times, a person will think that moisture was removed when in fact enough moisture was left behind to allow mold to start growing.

If a minor amount of moisture is lingering inside the wall cavities, behind the baseboards, in the carpet, or under the carpet padding it will likely be weeks before it all dries up, by that time the mold starts forming as visible sports on your walls.

Smelling a Mold Odor

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

When you have mold growing hidden away in your house, often a moldy smell might be the only clue that it's there. Don't ignore mold odors if you can't see any mold. You should thoroughly inspect your home before any mold problems get worse.

As experts in deodorization, SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson Professionals are trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. These odors can come from a number of sources both inside and outside a structure.

SERVPRO teaches IICRC technical classes in the proper removal of odors. Masking and other short cuts don't work when your odor problem is serious or persistent. Let the experts at SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson identify if you do in fact have a mold problem and remove it to like new conditions. Remember “Like it never even happened.”

Mold Hazards

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

A/C Unit Covered with Mold

A water-damaged property requires special attention to avoid or correct a mold explosion. Molds produce spores which spread easily through the air, and they form new mold growths (colonies) when they find the right conditions: moisture, nutrients (nearly anything organic) and a place to grow.

If you see mold growth, even if it's only small, you should take action immediately. Small mold patches can spread and the fact that there is any mold shows that the conditions in your home are right for mold to grow. If you don't take care of mold it will soon become a bigger problem. Visible mold growth could also be a sign that there is a much larger mold colony growing hidden away from view.

Mold can damage materials and health. The longer mold is allowed to grow, the greater the risk and the harder the cleanup. So as soon as the floodwaters recede and it is safe to return, don’t delay cleanup and drying.

Does Your Home Have a Mold Problem?

4/26/2019 (Permalink)

Mold affected areas.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Residents: Follow These Mold Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Galveston Island/Lake Jackson for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

SERVPRO of Galveston Island/Lake Jackson specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

There Could be Mold in Your Home if You Have Had a Leak

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

If you have experienced a water leak there is a good chance that you have mold growing in your home around the area where the leak occurred. It is important to remember that even condensation can cause mold to grow in humid climates.

Mold growth from leaks can often be hidden. If the leak was behind a wall or other surface then any mold will probably be hidden behind the surface too. Even if the leak was not behind a surface there could still be mold hidden out of view behind a wall or other surface from water which seeped through.

Often mold is found in air vents, behind sheet rock, under flooring and in insulation. Many times, when mold is present in these places the homeowner is not aware that they are living with the potentially hazardous toxin. If you suspect there could be mold in your home call SERVPRO of Galveston Island / Lake Jackson.

Servpro Breast Cancer Logo

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States (other than skin cancer). But millions of women are surviving the disease thanks in part to early detection and improvements in treatment.

The American Cancer Society is actively fighting breast cancer by helping women get tested to find breast cancer earlier, and helping them understand their treatment options and cope with the physical and emotional side effects. We also fund research to help prevent, find, and treat breast cancer.
